-Alexander McQueen - Women S/S 2009-
McQueen’s latest collection was quickly dubbed The Environmental Collection by the press because the runway was lined with endangered stuffed animals, the use of delicate flower motifs, and for using wood grain as a pattern. McQueen explained, through program notes, that he had “been pondering Charles Darwin, the survival of the fittest, and the deleterious results of industrialization on the natural world.”
As the collection progressed into evening the garments started to symbolize the human evolutionary impact, and the mood started to get a bit melodramatic. In an interview McQueen said he "doesn't want to preach" about such a serious subject.
As usual McQueen delivers a collection that not only stops you in your tracks because of its originality, but if you’re anything like me, it leaves you wondering why the hell anyone hasn’t thought of this before. At times he seems to choose things that are both obvious and obscure. A feat not easily obtained.
